The Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Garden is a 127-acre (51.4-hectare) arboretum, botanical garden, and historical site located in Arcadia, California, near the San Gabriel Mountains. It is open every day except Christmas Day.
The Arboretum is located across the street from Santa Anita Park, the horse racetrack, and the Santa Anita Fashion Park shopping mall, which is now known as Westfield Santa Anita.
The Arboretum is located on the last remaining portion of Rancho Santa Anita, one of Southern California’s Mexican land grants. Rancho Santa Anita was unique in that it was situated above a significant portion of the Raymond Basin aquifer. Three sag ponds and numerous springs were discovered in the area, and the only one that remains is now known as Baldwin Lake. Lacy Park in San Marino was once another sag pond, and the third is unknown but may have been on the grounds of the Huntington Library and Botanic Garden. Because of the relative abundance of water, it was a significant area in prehistory as a year-round source of water, with the body of water known as Baldwin Lake and the other sag ponds attracting both waterfowl and other animals, as well as Native Americans.
The presence of water and game, predictably, resulted in permanent Native American habitation in the area, which is thought to have been the location of the Tongva village of Aleupkigna.
